I'm taking the stairs, but thanks

I have a secret. I take great amounts of pleasure when people hold the elevator door for me at work and I waltz right past them and take the stairs. The look on their faces is a cross between “wow I can’t believe she would rather walk up all those stairs” and “gee, I should really start walking up all those stairs regularly too.”

It’s not even the fact that I enjoy the extra exercise although it is doing something very nice for my posterior but rather the fact that our work elevator is on its very last leg. I have gotten stuck in it more than once and whenever someone heavier than a ten year old steps inside its doors, it creaks and lurches like the cables that are holding it up are about to give out. And if more than three people are inside, it will usually skip a floor.

The elevator and I are no longer pals.
